Tiling is where a job either looks expensive or looks rushed, and almost all of that is decided before a single tile goes on.
Substrate first: floors re-boarded so there's no movement, walls flat and true, everything tanked where water will reach it. Tile a wall that isn't flat and every joint will tell on you, particularly with large-format porcelain where a millimetre of lip catches the light down the whole run.
We tile floor to ceiling in bathrooms, fit large-format porcelain, and do patterned and feature tiling where you want a bit of character. Recessed shower niches, tiled window reveals and mitred external corners are all standard for us rather than an extra.
Grout and silicone get the same attention — the right colour, cut cleanly, finished sharp.
